u_boltApril 15 - The island of Barbados is set to host the prestigious Caribbean Awards Sports Icon (CASI) for the first time on November 29 this year.

The Awards were founded in 2008 under Al Hamilton, founder of the Commonwealth Sports Awards, while Roosevelt King, the chief executive of the Barbados Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (BANGO), is current President of the Awards.

President of the Barbados Olympic Association, Steve Stoute, is a patron of the event while three-time Olympic champion and triple world record holder Usain Bolt and five-time Olympic gold medallist sprint queen Veronica Campbell-Brown are former recipients.

Jack Warner, the FIFA vice-president from Trinidad and Tobago, is also a former winner of the sports administrator prize, as is Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) President Mike Fennell.

Hamilton told insidethegames: "We are delighted that Barbados will be hosting the Caribbean Awards Sports Icon Awards for the first time as the island will provide the perfect backdrop to the biggest sport award ceremony in the Caribbean.

"Once again, the most high profile figures in the Caribbean involved in sport will be in attendance and fighting it out to take home the trophies.

"An event of this kind only happens because like-minded persons come together to make a difference. Sport is the adhesive which unites our region and allows us to 'walk and talk' on the international stage."
