Courtney_Tulloch_in_Trabzon_July_2011July 30 - Maidstone gymnast Courtney Tulloch, gold medallist in the all-around and rings at the 11th European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Trabzon, Turkey, carried the flag at the closing ceremony for a British team which had achieved its best ever medal total of 33 medals at an overseas version of this event.

With 17 golds, 10 silver and six bronzes, Britain finished second in the medals table behind Russia with 21, 17, 16 and ahead of Ukraine, Italy and Romania.

Reflecting on the success of Team GB, Chef de Mission Craig Hunter said:"This has been a great festival and our team has been very successful.

"We always aim to be the best we can be.

"Our athletes have come here and have performed outstandingly well.

"You just need to look at the medal table where we finished second, to see how well the team have performed, our greatest haul from an overseas EYOF.

"I think that the Organising Committee has done a superb job, and the facilities have been fabulous.

"We thank the Organising Committee, the people of Trabzon and all the volunteers who have made this such an enjoyable experience for our young athletes."

Speaking after the Ceremony in the H Avin Aker stadium - where the Olympic flag was handed over to the city of Utrecht, Holland, hosts of the next EYOF in July 2013 - Tulloch commented: "I was a bit nervous to carry the flag, but I did my best and it was a great honour."

Barry Collie, Gymnastics team leader, added: "It was really moving to see him and I was very proud.

"It is fantastic to see our sport recognised in an Olympic event.

"It's not just about British Gymnastics, Courtney has a club called Pegasus Gymnastics Club who invest a lot of time and effort into him so it is thanks to his personal coach - Ionut Tramdabaru.

"It is a credit to them, without their support I wouldn't get to work with talented people like Courtney."
