Mercedes_Russell_02-08-11June 29 - The US Olympic Committee (USOC) has announced that basketball star Mercedes Russell (pictured) and freestyle kayaker Dane Jackson are its June Athletes of the Month, with tennis players Bob and Mike Bryan taking the Team of the Month honour.


Russell was key in the FIBA Americas under-16 Championship, recording 11.4 rebounds and four blocks per game, as well as shooting 11.6 points per game - the second best in the US squad to help them take gold in Mexico.

She played in all five games, averaging 22.8 minutes per contest.

Jackson (pictured) meanwhile took four of eight medals won by the US Team at the 2011 Freestyle World Championships in Plattling, Germany.

The 17-year-old took gold in men's junior kayak, men's kayak squirt and men's canoe, as well as a bronze in the open canoe, making his three gold medal haul a record, which also earned him a special Bavarian Sportsman Award.

The Bryans won Wimbledon and the Wimbledon warm up event to take their doubles title haul to 73, marking their second Wimbledon crown and 11th grand slam.

Freestyle kayaker Emily Jackson came second and boxer Marlen Esparza third in the women's category, while the men's second and third places went to tennis player Bjorn Fratangelo and basketball star Jabari Parker respectively.

In the team category, the USA Water Polo Women's National team came in at second place and the USA Basketball Men's Under-16 team in third.
