Chris_Overholt_head_and_shouldersSeptember 1 - Chris Overholt has been appointed as the new chief executive and secretary general of the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), it was announced today.

His appointment is part of a new management structure designed to strengthen the organisation for the future which sees Jean Dupré step down as chief executive and secretary for personal reasons, although he will remain as a consultant.

Dupré had only been in the role since April 2010 having joined the COC from Speedskating Canada to replace Chris Rudge.

"Chris has the experience and the leadership qualities to drive the Canadian Olympic team to be among the world's best," said Marcel Aubut, the President of the COC.

"As CEO he will build an extremely strong future for this organisation.

"We understand Jean's position and I would like to personally thank him for his service to the COC and wish him the very best for continued success."

Overholt steps up from his current role at the COC as chief operating officer and chief marketing officer.

He had previously worked in the United States for the Miami Dolphins in the National Football and Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League as well as NBA side Toronto Raptors and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment in Canada.

"Sport is our core business and our athletes are at the heart of everything we do," said Overholt, who·will report to Aubut and the COC Board of Directors.

"We must give them the tools they need to convert their international success to Olympic podium finishes.

"I look forward to working with our athletes, National Sport Federations and partners as we work to become a best-in-class National Olympic Committee.

"I want to thank Marcel and the board for this incredible opportunity and I know, together with our leadership team, we have a bright future ahead."

Aubut also announced a series of other changes to the COC, including eliminating the chief operating role and streamlining the organisation with its senior executive leadership team members all now reporting directly Overholt.

Derek Kent, most recently the COC's Executive Director for Corporate and Brand Communications for the Canadian Olympic Committee, is promoted to the role of chief marketing officer to replace Overholt.

Caroline Assalian, former Executive Managing Director Sport and National Sports Federations (NSF) Relations for the COC, meanwhile, is promoted to the newly created role of Chief Sports Officer.

"After one year of reviewing the organisation's requirements, the board and I agree this new structure will significantly strengthen and enhance our ability to deliver for our athletes and partners," said Aubut.

"I would like to thank the board for their leadership and support."
