Carmelita_Jeter_16-09-11September 17 - Sprinter Carmelita Jeter (pictured) and decathlete Trey Hardee have been named as the US Olympic Committee's (USOC) Athletes of the Month, with the national volleyball team taking the team of the month honour for August.

Jeter shone at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu as she came home with gold after a 10.90sec run in the 100 metres.

She also claimed silver in the 200m and gold in the 4x100m relay.

Hardee retained his world decathlon title in South Korea, becoming only the third athlete to claim two world titles at a World Championships as the US swept to the top two positions - a first for the event.

Meanwhile, the US volleyball team reclaimed the title they won last year in Hong Kong at the 2011 FIVB World Grand Prix in Macau, China with a 3-0 victory over the highly fancied Brazilians in the final.

They came through a tough group with Serbia, Kazakhstan and China to reach the second group stage, where they again played Serbia, as well as Japan and the Dominican Republic.

In progressing to the third group stage, they lost just once, 3-1 to Serbia, but then cruised through the next round with 3-0 wins over Italy, Germany and Peru.

The final group stage saw them finish second to Brazil, and in the knockout rounds, they once more came up against Serbia, beating them 3-0 to progress to the final and a showdown with Brazil, where they avenged an earlier 3-1 defeat to the same opponents.

Second place in the women's category went to basketball star Elena Delle Donne as the US basketball team won gold at the World University Games, with Destinee Hooker (pictured) in third for her exploits in the volleyball squad in China.

Swimmer Tim Phillips came second in the men's for his performance at the World University Games, which he came away from with three gold medals, while baseball star Keegan Thompson was third for helping the US to victory in the IBAF Under-16 Baseball World Championship.

USA basketball's women's squad came second in the team category for their showing at the World University Games, with the disabled water ski team coming third for winning the World Championships in Ohio.
