JULY 20 - THE United States Olympic team is preparing to move into its pre-Games training base ahead of next month's event in Beijing.

A brand new gymnasium in Beijing Normal University has been built exclusively for the latest version of the basketball "Dream Team", including super stars Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) have flown in nine containers of equipment at a cost of $500,000 (£250,000) ready to ensure that their team has everything they want.

Kevin Han, manager of the USOC Sports Partnerships, said: "It's a fantastic gymnasium, everything is first class.

"Everything will be ready soon."

The gymnasium is part of a sports complex which also has aquatic facilities and various gyms for combat sports.

The University authorities have reminded students and people living nearby of strict security rules.

Wire fences have been built around the gymnasium and reporters and photographers have been banned to get close.

Located in North-West Beijing, about 15 minutes from the Olympic Athlete's Village, the University will provide the US team and staff with housing, restaurant facilities and training capability for about 400 athletes in preparation for the Games.

The USOC have paid $2 million (£1 million) for accommodation in 29 suites in a visiting professor's building and hotel rooms in an eight-floor apartment hotel.

Two 400-metre tracks are located on the site, one with a grass infield.

USA Track & Field have already signed an agreement with Birmingham City Council for their athletes to be based in the Midlands city in the build-up to the 2012 Olympics.
