altApril 15 - UEFA President Michel Platini (pictured) said today that he is confident that Ukraine will be ready to co-host the 2012 European Championships after he received Government assurances.

There have been fears that the tournament, which Ukraine is staging together with Poland, would have to be moved because building work on the new stadiums is behind schedule.

But Platini, who is currently visiting Kyiv, claimed that everything would be ready in time.

The former French international said: "Based on assurances made to me at the highest levels of the Ukrainian Government, I have every confidence it will be ready."

Scotland is among the countries who were ready to step in if the tournament was moved.

UEFA's ruling Executive Committee will select the final host cities at its meeting in Bucharest on May 12.

Poland has put forward five, Ukraine six.

Platini said between six and eight cities would be chosen.

He said: "You can't hold 31 games in 12 cities, it is not logical and too expensive."

Platini warned, though, that stadiums in Kyiv and Warsaw must be ready if Ukraine and Poland are both to participate.

He said: "If the stadium in Kyiv is not ready, then Ukraine will not host its part of the championship, and if the stadium in Warsaw is not ready, then Poland will not host its part.
