altApril 15 - Abhinav Bindra (pictured), who became India's first-ever individual Olympic gold medallist in Beijing last year, has been dropped from an elite group of shooters preparing for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The 26-year-old, who won the 10 metre air rifle event in the Chinese capital, has been excluded because he has missed a number of training camps and not competed in domestic events.

Bindra said: "I don't know what the NRAI (National Rifle Association of India) wants from me.

"If they think I am a non-performer and have never performed for the country, they should simply let me know and I will quit the sport gracefully,"

Bindra, who is also the reigning world champion, claimed that he had been unable to attend events in India because he was competing abroad and training with Gabriela Buhlmann, his Swiss coach.

He said: "I had submitted my plans for the Commonwealth Games to the Sports Ministry and I am thankful to them that they are sponsoring my training under the National Sports Development Programme.

"Recently, I had a month-long training stint in Germany.

"Winning medals for the country in the Commonwealth Games is my next target and I am working towards it."

Bindra's father, A.S, who has overseen his son's career, even building a shooting range in the family's garden so he could practice, is angry with the decision.

He said: "The NRAI wants Abhinav to practice in their camps.

"But I just want to ask them, do they have all the facilities he requires for training for the 2010 Games.

"They don't even have a foreign coach for the rifle events.

"Provide him all the facilities he wants, including personal coaches, and he will join the camps in India.
