Alexander Zhukov_in_front_of_Russian_Olympic_Committee_logoJuly 9 - Alexander Zhukov, President of the Russian Olympic Committee, will chair the proceedings of this year's Global Sports Industry Congress (GSIC), which will focus on the myriad sports events coming to the country in the coming years.

One of the biggest events for Russia in the near future is the 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympics in Sochi, and its Organising Committee President and chief executive, Dmitry Chernyshenko, is among the speakers.

Before Sochi (pictured below), Kazan will host the Universiade, for the world's university athletes, in a year's time, and its President, Vladimir Leonov, is set to join Chernyshenko at the congress, to be held at the official House of Russia in London during this summer's Olympics on August 2.

Also on the menu for Russia over the next few years are the FIFA World Cup in 2018, the World Athletics Championships in Moscow next year and the World Swimming Championships in Kazan two years later.

In addition, the World Ice Hockey Championships will be hosted by Moscow and St Petersburg in 2016, followed by football's Confederations Cup the year afterwards, while Sochi is also set to stage Formula One motor races from 2014.

Oleg Beriev, the managing director of Sportslab Marketing, which specialises in the Russian market and is working with communications company Eventica to organise the GSIC, is also scheduled to speak.

The GSIC was launched in London three years ago and has since focused on the so-called emerging sports nations – such as Russia.
