altMay 20 - Commonwealth Games England (CGE) has appointed executive search specialist Sports Recruitment International to manage the appointment of new board directors as part of a radical shake up of the organisation.

With the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi rapidly approaching, CGE has taken the opportunity to redefine the board’s remit, and as a result, is looking for directors with strong experience in sport, finance, marketing and communications and governance to join chairman, Sir Andrew Foster on CGE’s board.

Dame Kelly Holmes, the 2004 Olympic 800 and 1500 metres champion, was yesterday unveiled as the new president of the CGE, replacing Sir Christopher Chataway, who stepped down after 15 years in the role.

Ann Hogbin, the chief executive of CGE, said: "CGE has made great progress across all areas of the organisation and these appointments enforce our commitment to continuing that development.

"In the current economic and sporting climate, it is important for organisations to have expertise internally to help adapt to the changing conditions.

"By strengthening the board in several key areas, we will be better placed to make the most of the opportunities available and give ourselves the best chance of success in Delhi and Glasgow [2014]."

Leigh Hine, head of elite performance and participation at Sports Recruitment International, believes the appointments are a sign of the changing attitudes towards board positions within domestic and international sport.

He said: "We are delighted to be selected by the CGE to work on these crucial appointments and look forward to helping them prepare for the opportunities ahead.

"By sourcing a board with complementary experience from inside and outside the sector, CGE can draw on a range of skills to help them prepare for what promises to be a very bright future."

Candidates for the positions can come from a wide range of backgrounds but a passion and enthusiasm for sport and its continued development are a prerequisite, Hine said.

Working alongside the other directors and Sir Andrew, it is expected that the commitment will be four to six meetings per year.
