JULY 15 - A MAJOR road-race featuring Sammy Wanjiru, the world half-marathon record holder who is a member of Kenya's Olympic team, and Jon Brown (pictured), formerly Britain's top distance runner, is to be held in Hyde Park on Sunday.

Up to 15,000 runners are expected to take part in the BUPA Great Capital Run around a Royal Park that is due to stage the triathlon events during the 2012 Olympics.

They will be raising money for Capital' 95.8's "Help a London Child",  which improves he lives of thousands of vulnerable children living in the Capital.

Wanjiru will use the 10 kilometres road race before going off to finalise his preparations for the Olympic Games where his second place in this year's Flora London Marathon, earned him selection for his national team.

Compatriots Ismael Kirui and Richard Limo, both past winner's of the World Championships 5,000 metres gold medals, head the opposition.

Kirui, who rarely races these days, is returning to defend the title he won 12 months ago, while for Limo it will be a test outing before taking part in the Great Wales Run the following weekend.

Brown, a former team-mate of London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe at Yorkshire club Hallamshire Harriers, was Britain's leading distance runner for more than a decade, winning the European Cross Country Championships in 1996 and finishing fourth in the Olympic marathons in 2000 and 2004.

But he has since switched his allegiance to Canada following a row over funding.

This will be his first race in Britain since then.

Highlights of the race, which starts at 10.20m, can be seen on Channel 5 at midnight on July 22 and Sky Sports at various times on its channels starting on July 28.

Hyde Park is also due to host a half-marathon, featuring up to 12,500 runners, on October 12.
