altJULY 11 - STEVE SCOTT (pictured) has won his first major shooting title at the European Championships in Nicosia with less than a month to go until the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Despite several podium finishes over the years a championship win has eluded the athlete from Battle in Sussex, until this impressive performance in the double trap.

Scott, a Team B&Q athlete, finished in second place in the heats with a result of 143 out of 150 to secure a place in the final.

In the final Scott stole the show and scored 48 out of 50 securing his win, in a strong field of 25, crowning him European Champion.

Scott said: "It's not often you get the chance to become European Champion, and I woke up on the morning looking forward to the opportunity.

"This attitude worked well for me and I was very content with my performance in the heats and of course in the final.

"However, I can not afford to rest on my laurels as there are a number of very good shooters out there and I must continue to push myself to ensure I am ahead of the game at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games this summer."

Jim Hunter, the general manager at B&Q Bexhill, where Scott works, said: "I am delighted with Steve's performance in Cyprus and so pleased that the hard work that he has put in is paying off.

"The Team B&Q programme that Steve is a member of was specifically designed to allow him to train full time, and receive the benefit of full-time pay, whilst only working reduced hours in-store at B&Q and it seems that this has really benefited Steve over the last few years.

"Everyone at B&Q Bexhill is behind Steve and we really hope that he can make it all the way in Beijing."
