altJune 28 - Godfrey Rampling (pictured), Britain's oldest Olympian and a 1936 gold medallist, has died at the age of 100.

Rampling, father of Hollywood actress Charlotte Rampling, first competed for Britain at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where he anchored the 4 x 400 metres relay team to the silver medal, behind the United States.

Four years later in Berlin, Rampling helped Britain to overcome their American rivals and claim the gold medal.

He also won the individual 400m and a gold medal in the 4x400m at the Empire Games in 1934 in London.

Rampling was born in Blackheath and became a Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Artillery attached to NATO, retiring in 1958 after 29 years service.

He had celebrated his 100th birthday last month with a party attended by his daugther at his nursing home in Bushey.
