altSEPTEMBER 13 - BRITAIN'S basketball players lifted their hopes of reaching the Europeant finals for the first time in 28 years with a 96-86 win over Israel in Liverpool tonight.

It was the team's third consectutive victory and avenged the over-time defeat against Israel in Tel Aviv 11 days ago.

Britain may now only need one win from their next two games in the Czech Republic and Bosnia to book a place in the finals in Poland next year, which would be their first appearance since 1981.

That should be enough to book the team a place in the London 2012 Olympics.

Former Dallas Maverick player Pops Mensah-Bonsu (pictured) again top-scored for the second time in three matches with 22 points while Chicago Bulls star Luol Deng added 20.

Mensah-Bonsu also took 11 rebounds with Deng taking six and making five assists. Nick George weighed in with 15 points and Joel Freeland 13.

Britain built up a 20-point advantage late in the third quarter and offered little by way of consolation as they closed out the win in the fourth.

Meir Tapiro, Britain's tormentor with 27 points in Israel, was restricted to just two all evening.

Britain made a tentative start as captain Andrew Sullivan missed an early pair of free throws and Israel took an early 11-7 lead.

A pair of baskets by Nate Reinking gave Britain the lead on a 7-0 run and the hosts edged the first quarter 22-19.

Britain then dominated the second period to take a 10-point advantage with Mensah-Bonsu to the fore in a 15-6 run and George adding a three-pointer.

Israel's Lior Eliyahu landed 16 points in the first half but Britain still led at the break 53-40.

George hit six points in a row early in the second half, four of them coming on back-to-back alley-oop dunks supplied by Deng.

Freeland also shone as Britain built up a 76-54 advantage before the end of the third quarter.

Israel cut the gap to eight points with 71 seconds remaining but Britain were never in danger and finished strongly.
