AUGUST 16 - SEBASTIAN COE (pictured) today vowed to make London 2012 an event that the whole country can participate in and enjoy by turning it into a giant party.

Coe said in an interview published today in the Daily Telegraph: "Ours will be the Games for everyone.

"Of course it will be in London, but it is important the whole of the UK shares in it. In China, that's a massive challenge because it's so huge.

"In America you wouldn't have felt involved in Atlanta [in 1996].

"Actually, if you were in Atlanta you probably weren't too aware of what was going on in Atlanta.

"But we can use our geographical advantage to get an emotional connectivity with our Games across the country.

"That will be our goal.

"It's about how we can be creative with live sites in city centres, the German World Cup fanzone idea.

"There are lots of things I think we can do which are quite instinctive to us anyway.

"What does the world know about us?

"We're actually quite good at partying.

"Let's turn it into a giant party."

Coe claimed that the spectacular opening ceremony put by Beijing last week had left him and the rest of his team at London 2012 even more excited by the prospect of the Games coming back to Britain for the first time in 64 years.

He said: "Actually our guys weren't cowed at all.

"The thing is, the people who will plan our opening ceremony are part of that world.

"We didn't go round the office and point at someone and say, right you're doing the opening ceremony.

"The people we have do this for a living, they're the very best around at arranging pop concerts and directing West End shows.

"And they're British.

"They looked at that and thought that's really good, but we can do something as good, set in a different context.

"They were more pumped up because it was so good.

"I think they were quite excited by the challenge."
