altOCTOBER 22 - A GOVERNMENT-COMMISSIONED report has recommended that the venues for basketball, equestrian and shooting at London 2012 should not be moved, insidethegames can reveal.

The report from accountants KPMG concluded that basketball should remain within Olympic Park, equestrian at Greenwich Park and shooting at the Royal Artillery Barracks at Woolwich.

They concluded that any changes would not save any money and, therefore, not worth it.

The decision not to recommend events be moved from Greenwich Park will be a huge blow to protestors who were hoping that the report would recommend that equesstrian events should be moved to Windsor Park and Hickstead.

The report was presented this afternoon to the London 2012 Board, which consists of Olympic Minister Tessa Jowell, London Mayor Boris Johnson, 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe and Colin Moynihan, chairman of the British Olympic Association.

The decision to keep the basketball in the Olympic Park will avert a major row with a sport who are among the most influential in the world.

They were unhappy at suggestions that the early rounds could be moved to Wembley Arena before the finals are due to take place at the O2 Arena, the former Millennium Dome, which will be known as the North Greenwich Arena during the Games for marketing purposes.

As previously reported on insidethegames, Patrick Baumann, the general secretary of the world governing body FIBA, and David Stern, the chief executive of the hugely-influential NBA, were outraged that the sport should be moved away from the main area.

Baumann had written to leaders at London 2012 and Government officials to protest.

The decision not to move the equestrian events will prove controversial as several protest groups fear that the Park, which has enjoyed Royal patronage ever since the Duke of Gloucester, brother of Henry V, inherited the land in 1427, will be damaged beyond repair.

However, any plans to move venues would need to be rubber-stamped by the International Olympic Committee's ruling Executive Board, something highly unlikely in the case of Greewnich Park as it has already been identified by the United States broadcaster NBC as the most tele-visiual location of the 2012 Games.
