Last month officials in Madrid revealed that an official poll conducted by the International Olympic Committee as part of its evaluation of the bid showed that support in Spain was 85 per cent.

This latest poll also gives an idea of how Spanish citizens perceive the benefits of hosting an Olympics, to the city and to the rest of the country.

In the case of Madrid, 96 per cent of the public believe that the greatest benefit would be a boost for the city’s reputation and image.

Spanish citizens living outside of Madrid plan to travel there during the Games in great numbers. with 32.6 per cent of those questioned will definitely travel to the city and a further 63 per cent say that it is very likely.

Also 60 per cent say they plan to assist during the competitions.

Mercedes Coghen, the chief executive of Madrid 2016, said: “It is so important at this crucial stage of the bidding process that the support of our people continues to grow.

"It is this shared passion and belief in Madrid from around the country that has driven this project forward.

"We all want this dream for our city, our people and the Olympic family to become a reality.”

One of the strengths of Madrid’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games is the support it enjoys from all levels of society officials claim.

Over the last 12 months officials from the Spanish Government, the Royal Family, sporting federations, business - in the form of corporate sponsors - and the general public have all declared they are in favour of Madrid hosting the 2016 Games.
