altSEPTEMBER 11 - ENGLAND'S team manager Pete Nicholson (pictured) today claimed he was happy with his side's performance at the World Hockey Cup in Moenchengladbach despite them failing to qualify for the semi-final.

Their chances were ended when they were beaten 4-3 by Holland despite leading twice during the match. It was the team's third consectutive defeat having started with a victory over India.

"We have had three cracking matches against Korea, Germany and Holland and have nothing to show for it," Nicholson said.

"But we are very happy we are competing against these top sides that, 18 months ago, would have blown us apart."

Early goals by Surbiton's James Tindall and Reading defender Richard Mantell put England on top, before two goals in three minutes put the Dutch level.

Tindall added another after the break but two goals by Taeke Taekema ensured the Dutch triumphed.

England are now fourth in Pool B, four points off a semi-final spot with one group game left, against South Africa.
