altSEPTEMBER 11 - DARREN KENNY (pictured) and tandem pairing Anthony Kappes and Barney Storey got Britain off to a positive start at the IPC and UCI World Cycling Championships, by winning gold in world record times on the first day of competition.

Derbyshire cyclist Anthony Kappes, 33, and his tandem rider Barney Storey, were first to medal in Aigle, Switzerland, taking gold in the B and VI 1km time trial. Kenny, a Paralympic champion, then added to this success by winning gold in the CP3 1km time trial.

Krappes and Storey set a new world record, with their time of 1min 04.259sec to beat Australian’s Leon Larkin and Tyson Lawrence to the gold.

“We came here to do our best because it's a time trial and nobody can influence what we do," said Krappes.

"We were worried about the start and the tight corners but they weren't as bad as we expected."

Kenny, a 36-year-old Bournemouth rider sped to victory over Tour-de-France cyclist Javier Ochoa of Spain setting a world record of 1:13.109 to pick up Britain’s second rainbow jersey of the day.

"A rainbow jersey - I've wanted one since I was 11,” said Kenny. “I'm not sure though if this win takes the pressure off or adds to it. It is always nice to beat Javier but I get more pleasure from seeing him going much faster than he has done even though it adds to the pressure.

“I wasn't that relaxed coming into this, on the outside perhaps but not the inside. Today I probably had the most doubt I have ever had but you try not to show it because you don't want anyone to see you're thinking like that".

Former Paralympic swimmer turned cyclist Sarah Bailey, also had a successful day on the track and is now guaranteed a medal in the LC1 women’s pursuit, having qualified in the fastest time for the gold medal race against Australia’s Claire McClean.
