altTHE basketball venue for the 2012 Olympics could be delivered as a flat-pack from Europe, it was reported today.

The Evening Standard reported today that the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is in talks with a Swiss sports arena manufacturer to deliver a self-assembly venue for 2012 to try to save costs

The Evening Standard claims that up to £60 million could be saved by importing a basic steel structure for around £12 million.

With a capacity of 12,000, the venue would host the preliminary stages of the basketball tournaments and may also host handball matches and serve as a holding venue for athletes during the opening ceremony.

The finals of the basketball tournament are due to be held at The O2, formerly the Millennium Dome, which will be renamed the North Greenwich Arena during the Games because of strict marketing rules.

After the Games the temporary arena could be dismantled and sold off with the land made available to developers, said the Evening Standard.

The baskettball venue's viability is already being examined by accountancy firm KMPG, which is also considering whether to recommend that the equestrian events and shooting be moved out of Greenwich Park and Woolwich Barracks respectively.
