alt BRITAIN tonight won its first medal at the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham, the biggest athletics event to be staged in Britain before the 2012 Olympics.

Kelly Sotherton won silver in the pentathlon at the National Indoor Arena by breaking her two-year-old Commonwealth record of 4,927 points.

Sotherton failed by 17 points to inflict the first multi-events defeat for five years on defending champion Carolina Kluft.

Sotherton, runner-up behind her Swedish rival two years ago in Madrid, needed to finish at least 1.65 seconds ahead of Kluft in the 800 metres but the Swede stayed on her shoulder throughout.

"I worked my guts off and pushed Carolina all the way," said Sotherton.

"Everyone raised their games, there were so many personal bests out there.

"Having such a close competition makes things more interesting for everyone, especially going into the outdoor season."

Earlier, Sheffield's Jessica Ennis had led briefly but only to fall out of contention.
