altDANIEL KEATINGS (pictured) won a silver medal for Britain at the European Gymnastics Championships in Amsterdam today.

The 17-year-old  from Huntingdon was runner-up to Hungary's Krisztian Berki, with Flavius Koczi of Romania in third.

Team-mate Louis Smith nearly made it a double celebration for Team GB but was just edged out of the podium places.

Huntingdon's Keatings took a creditable 13th place overall yesterday in the men's all-round individual competition.

The last British male competitor to win a European medal was Kanukai Jackson in the vault in 2002.

A delighted Keatings said: "I'm thrilled.

"I came here to make a final but never expected a medal, so I'm over the moon.

"Now the hard work begins for the World Championships (in Stuttgart) in September."

Tweddle finished second in the women's floor exercise after choosing not to defend her uneven bars title as she is still recovering from a shoulder operation.

She lost out to Italian all-round champion Vanessa Ferrari.

Ferrari scored 15.400 to pip Tweddle on 15.250, while Alina Kozich of Ukraine finished with the bronze in Amsterdam.
