Ji-Sung, who has played more than 50 times for South Korea is convinced they would stage an outstanding World Championships.

 

He said: "I played two matches for South Korea in Daegu at the FIFA World Cup in 2002 and the city holds precious memories for me.

 

"I'll never forget the atmosphere in the stadium and the enthusiasm of the fans which left a permanent mark on the world of sport, let alone on me.

 

“I'm absolutely convinced that Daegu would host a magnificent World Championships in Athletics and I wish them all the best as they reach the final stages of the campaign.

 

"It's important for world sport and specifically for world athletics that events as prestigious as the World Championships are hosted in Asia and I know our people would give the athletes and spectators a fantastic welcome."

 

Bid Committee chief, President Yoo Chong-Ha said: “We are delighted that Ji-Sung has expressed his support for Daegu’s bid.

 

"I was at the World Cup matches in 2002 and was enthralled with how he played.

 

“The Daegu International Athletics Meet in 2005 and 2006 has shown that the fantastic support we enjoyed at the World Cup was not a one-off and I sincerely hope we can provide Daegu and indeed Asiaand the world with another fantastic sports event in 2011 or 2013.”

 

Golf star Michelle Wie, gold medal winning hurdler Liu Xiang, former American 110 metres hurdles world champion Allen Johnson and 100m gold medalist Lauryn Williams have already backed Daegu’s bid.
