alt MORE than a 100 of Britain's potential 2012 Olympians will begin competing in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF)  in Sydney tomorrow.

 

They will be among more than 1600 athletes from 23 nations will battle across 16 Olympic sports in a showcase of the world's premier 13- to 19-year-old athletes.

 

The team of 112 is largest Team GB squad selected outside of a Summer Games.

 

The AYOF is specially designed to introduce and expose young athletes to the Olympic and international sporting environment, complete with drug testing, an Opening ceremony, and medal ceremonies.

 

The AYOF, run by the Australian Olympic Committee, also aims to promote sportsmanship and national pride to young up-and-coming athletes.

 

The AYOF is currently Australia’s largest multi-sport event with 1,600 athletes aged 13-19 from 21 nations and regions competing in 16 Olympic sports.

 

The event will run over five days, largely out of Sydney Olympic Park, kicking off with football, hockey and badminton before the opening ceremony on Wednesday night at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

 

A highlight on Thursday is the start of the sailing, with the iconic Sydney Opera House the backdrop.
