altBRITISH Modern Pentathletes Katy Livingston (pictured) and Heather Fell won their first World Cup medals when they took silver and bronze in Moscow today.

And there were also impressive performances by Britain’s men at their World Cup in Budapest, where Sam Weale came eighth and Ben McLean ninth – the best results by British men in the one-day format of the sport.

Livingston rounded off a strong performance by producing the seventh quickest time – 10min 55sec  – to secure silver on a rain-soaked course.

Fell’s time of 11:03 was the 11th fastest run.

Russia’s Tatiana Mouratova took gold on home soil.

Britain’s third modern pentathlete to reach today’s final – Lindsey Weedon – finished 18th.

Weale and McLean both produced their best World Cup finishes in the men’s event.

Weale came eighth with 5,492 points and McLean was ninth with 5,488.

They both set personal bests in the swim to finish strongly and produced solid performances in the run.

Gold went to Russia’s Andrei Moiseev, with 5,700 points.

Jan Bartu, the performance director of the Modern Pentathlon Association of Great Britain, said: “This is one of the most promising weekends for us.

“It’s outstanding to have the men’s and women’s team performing so well and in these numbers in one weekend.”
