Abbi_CarterJuly 19 - Abbi Carter (pictured) was chosen to carry Britain's flag today at the opening ceremony of the tenth European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Tampere, a ceremony attended by Finland's President Tarja Halonen.

There were more than 3,000 spectators at the Tampere Ice Stadium.

In keeping with Olympic tradition, the Ceremony included the lighting of the Olympic Flame, taking of the athletes and officials oaths, and with much great enthusiasm and joy, the parade of 2,600 athletes from the 49 nations taking part in the 2009 EYOF.

More than a 100 performers, including fire jugglers and roller blading dancers, entertained an audience, which included International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge, European Olympic Committee (EOC) President Patrick Hickey, British Olympic Association (BOA) chairman Colin Moynihan and chief executive Andy Hunt.

Earlier in the day Britain'sChef de Mission Mark England announced to the rest of Britain's team that Carter, a hammer thrower, had been chosen to carry the flag.

He said: “I’m delighted for Abbi, not only is she a very promising field athlete, but also a leader and a positive role model among her peers.”

Carter, who hails from Hessle and was recently crowned 2009 English Schools Champion, said; “Being chosen as Team GB flag bearer was completely unexpected and I feel proud.

"The experience at the opening ceremony was really quite indescribable.”

England said: “The opening ceremony was a fantastic celebration of Olympism and really set the tone for the Festival.

“Team GB comprises a very talented group of 62 young athletes across six sports and they possess great potential.

"The next five days of competition will be full of excitement and every athlete will gain priceless Olympic experience to help them progress with their future international careers.”
