alt KATY LIVINGSTON (pictured), Mhairi Spence and Lindsey Weedon made sure Great Britain ended their Modern Pentathlon World Championships campaign on a high note by striking gold in the women’s team relay event.

The trio were never out of the medal positions throughout today’s action in Berlin.

They went into the final discipline – the 1500 metres relay run – in top spot and just held off a strong finish by the Polish team to win gold.

Spence ran the first leg, passing to Livingston, with Weedon holding off Poland’s 2006 individual world champion Marta Dziadura to secure gold.

“It was a happy ending for us,” said Jan Bartu, the GB team’s Performance Director.

“We’ve had some ups and downs during the championships, but this shows that there’s plenty of quality in the team.

“The team relay isn’t an Olympic event, but we wanted to go home with something, so we’re pleased that it was a gold.”

The GB team was aided by having Weedon in Berlin for the team relay – she did not participate in the individual competitions so arrived fresh for the relay.

The British trio were in third place after the first discipline, the shooting, having accumulated a combined score of 272 worth 1,168 modern pentathlon points. Belarus led with Egypt second.

GB climbed a place to second after the fencing courtesy of another third place performance.

The GB fencers won 63 contests and lost 45 to score 844 points.

After two disciplines Russia were top, with GB second and Belarus third.

Britain's pentathletes produced the fourth best performance in the pool, but that was good enough to keep them in second place overall, just behind Russia, with the Czech Republic now joining them in the medal zone.

Britain moved into top spot for the first time on the day after the riding. GB’s trio scored 1,074 points from the ride to move to 4318 in total.

They were aided by a particularly poor performance by the Russian team, who could only muster 472 points in the riding arena, relegating them to 11th overall.

It meant Great Britain led by 42 points from the Czech Republic going into the run, with home team Germany in third spot.

And the British trio put in a determined performance to ensure they will return home with gold.
