DECEMBER 21 - GOLF at Gleneagles will not be part of the programme if Glasgow wins the 2014 Commonwealth Games after international officials rejected the idea of including it.

Glasgow hoped the prospect of top players competing in the home of golf would boost their chances of the city hosting the event.

But the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) have turned down a formal application from the International Golf Federation because they feared that a golf tournament would be "mediocre" if top players did not take part to captain teams.

The Glasgow bid team pushed for golf's inclusion on the approved list after Jack McConnell asked them to come up with a distinctly Scottish bid.

Scotland's top player Colin Montgomerie backed the plan which was revealed earlier this year.

CGF chief executive Mike Hooper explained: "We had concerns about the depth and quality of a golf tournament in the Commonwealth Games.

"Yes, a lot of people play golf around the Commonwealth.

"And if we attracted the Commonwealth's best players, then you could argue for it.

"But without the big tour players, it could be a very mediocre tournament and the International Golf Federation acknowledged they could not guarantee the very best players."

Glasgow is competing with the Canadian city of Halifax and the capital of Nigeria, Abuja.

The CGF will announce the venue next November.
