August 17 - UK Athletics were today forced to defend themselves against allegations they had hindered the progress of Jessica Ennis (pictured), the newly-crowned world hepthatlon champion, in the build-up to Berlin.

Toni Minichiello, Ennis' coach, had claimed that the athletes build-up to the Championships in the German capital had been disrupted by the loss of key personnel.

He said: I've just lost a nutritionist, a physiologist and a performance analyst.

"It's a UK Athletics thing."

But Ed Warner, the chairman of UK Athletics, hit back at the claims and alleged that Minichiello had let the pressure of the last few days get to him.

He said: "We've worked very hard with Jess and with Toni to make sure that she was in the best shape to get on the start line here in Berlin and it's worked.

"What we're trying to put in place is a system that will not only support Jess Ennis today but also all the other athletes that are coming through and the Jess Ennises of tomorrow and Toni understands that and I think he's very grateful for the support that we've given her and the lottery has given her over recent years."

Ennis' victory capped a remarkable comeback from the potentially career-threatening fractured right foot she suffered a little over a year ago which ruled her out of the Beijing Olympics.

Warner said: "What you'll see is a better system in place for her to be kept injury free and to get to the start line in 2012 in best shape.

"We paid for her physio to be in the most important place, that was the training camp in Portugal in the couple of weeks leading up to the games.

"I think this was Toni feeling some of the pressure himself just ahead of the competition and I think we all understand each other and are working well together."

Earlier, UK Athletics' head coach Charles van Commenee had lavished praise after Ennis had become the first athlete to win a global title since he took over following the team's disappointing performance at the Olympics in Beijing.

He said: "She is cool, calm and collected and that is her special quality.

"She is not affected by the opposition or the occasion and there is room for improvement."
