altFEBRUARY 15 - BRITISH cyclist Darren Kenny (pictured) has set a new UCI world hour's record for Paralympic athletes at the World Cup in Copenhagen.

The 37-year-old from Dorset, winner of five medals at the Paralympics in Beijing last year, including four gold, covered 40.156 kilometres.

Kenny was already holder of the absolute hour record at 41.817km and now emulates another Briton, Chris Boardman, who also held both records at the same.

Under the rules of the UCI to get the other record, Kenny was banned from using much of the new technology that is available, including tri-bars, solid wheels and aerodynamic hats.

Instead, he had to use drop handlebars, spoked wheels and sausage hats.

Kenny said: "That was seriously unpleasant but I am pleased with the distance.

"Originally we wanted to do the athletes record but first thought it better to get the other [UCI] record first.

"With Team GB, it is all about the bike and all that so I wanted to go out there and do it without that excuse if you like.

"The bike was good.

"We got the position just right and it handled well, really smooth.

"I felt we needed something for me to focus on between Beijing and whenever and learn some new skills and looking back on it, it has been fun even though it doesn't feel very pleasant right now."

Kenny was one of Britain's most promising young cyclists until an accident suffered during the junior Tour of Ireland when he was 18 cut short his career.

He began racing again in 2000, primarily as a means to keep fit and within four years had won three medals at the Paralympics in Athens, including two gold.
