altTHE Australian rugby team are to play game against the invitational Barbarians side at Wembley Stadium as part of the celebrations for the centenary of the 1908 London Olympics, it was confirmed today

The match, at the request of the British Olympic Association, has been scheduled to commemorate Australia's Olympic gold medal at the 1908 London Olympics, the Australian Rugby Union said in a statement released today in Sydney.

Details of the match had been first reported in insidethegames in January.

The match will be the culmination of the Wallabies tour, which will begin with a Bledisloe Cup game against New Zealand in Hong Kong on November 1 before ending their tour at Wembley on December 3.

Australia are also due to play England at Twickenham on November 23.

"We are playing five tests, starting with an historic Bledisloe Cup game in Hong Kong, then ending the trip with a sixth game against the Barbarians which has major historical connections," ARU chief executive John O'Neill said.

"It is, in many respects, a ground-breaking venture; a first Bledisloe Cup test offshore, playing at the famed and redeveloped Wembley Stadium, and the opportunity to celebrate our Olympic Games success 100 years ago."

Rugby union was part of the 1908 Olympics, when the final was played at White City, which was later demolished.

The host Britain was represented by Cornwall, the 1907 county champion.

Defending Olympic champions France withdrew, leaving Australasia - represented by the Australian team - as the only other remaining entrant.

The visiting team competed in the London Olympics in conjunction with their inaugural tour of the United Kingdom in 1908 and 1909.

The Wallabies went into the Olympic match as the clear favourites based upon their 18-5 defeat of Cornwall in their third tour match.

They outscored Britain seven tries to one to win the gold medal with a 32-3 victory; with only two teams competing, silver was awarded to Cornwall and no bronze was awarded.

Wembley, the main stadium for the 1948 London Olympics, is due to stage the semi-finals and finals of the football tournament in 2012.
