August 8 - The Professional Sports Group (PSG), a marketing agency based in Surrey and Abu Dhabi whose clients include world diving champion Tom Daley (pictured), have appointed a new head of sponsorship for the Olympics.

As part of PSG's expansion plans, Richard Downey has been promoted to head of sponsorship for Olympic and team Sports.

Downey previously ran his own triathlon representation and marketing businesses, including managing all five members of the team that represented Britain at the Olympics in Beijing last year.

His promotion at PSG follows a successful period for the company's athletes, which most recently saw Daley crowned world diving champion on the 10 metre platform in Rome.

Another client, Alistair Brownlee, has won three races in the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championships Series and is currently second going into next week's leg in London.

Fran Halsall, meanwhile last month, won a silver medal in the 100m freestyle at the World Swimming Championshps.

Daley, Brownlee and Halsall are part of an impressive portfolio of clients that also includes former rower Sir Matthew Pinsent, the four-time Olympic champion, cyclist Jason Kenny, who won gold and silver medals in the team pursuit and individual sprint at the Games in Beijing, and sailor Shirley Robertson, a two-time Olympic champion.

The company also represents Sue Barker, formerly Britain's top female tennis player who is now a leading presenter for BBC Television.

The PSG, which was founded in 1996, has also appointed Michela Chiappa to take on the role of account director on the Etihad Airways portfolio of UK sponsorships.

Both her and Downey will form part of PSG's UK Management Committee.

Jamie Cunningham, the founder and group managing director, said: "We already have an excellent team in the UK.

"Richard's promotion is well deserved as he is one of the best client managers in UK sport.

"We have also worked with Michela in the Middle East and know that she will further enhance our consulting business here."
