August 7 - Jordan will be allowed to compete in this month's World Championships in Berlin despite its national athletics federation having been disbanded.

The Jordan Athletics Federation (JAF) Executive Board was disbanded by the Jordan Olympic Committee (JOC) last month July due to administrative irregularities and an extraordinary General Assembly meeting will be held on August 18 to elect a new board.

That is three days after the start of the Championships on August 15 but the world governing body, the International Assocation of Athletics Federations (IAAF), have invited two Jordian athletes to compete.

Prince Feisal Al Hussein, the President of the JOC, said: “I would like to thank the IAAF for their support and guidance and we will work closely with them to ensure that the future is bright for athletics in Jordan."

Sprinters Khalil Hananeh and Rania Shukri will represent Jordan in Berlin in the 200 metres and 400m respectively.

A number of other sports bodies have suspended by the JOC, including the Jordan Basketball Federation (JBF), who are in financial trouble and owe JD241,000 (£203,643) to its players.

Sari Hamdan, the vice chairman of the JOC, said: Hamdan, said: "Due to the fact that the committee responsible for following up on all federations discovered several violations by the JBF, we had to take the decision of dissolving the federation.

"This committee has been working closely with the JBF to settle some key issues regarding some serious violations. This has been done also to other federations."

Walid Abu Obaid, a consultant to Prince Feisal, said that the total JBF deficit had reached JD1.2 million (£1 million).

He said: "The JOC discovered that what the JBF spent on different teams [all ages] did not exceed five per cent of the budget and the rest was allocated to different areas.

"The total of what the JBF spent since the beginning of this year reached JD1.1 million (£929,000), which is double the budget allocated to the federation."

Hamdan warned that the JOC will keep following up on all federations.

He said: "We appreciate the work of everyone who cares for the future of sport in the Kingdom."
