altCAMPBELL WALSH, a silver medallist in Athens four years ago, will lead a trio of Scots in Britain's canoe slalom team at the Beijing Olympics, it was announced today.

The 30-year-old from Bridge of Allan will compete in the kayak single and will be joined by David Florence in the canoe single and Fiona Pennie in the women's kayak single.

Walsh, who recently won the European Championship, said: “I am looking forward to my second Olympic Games - it' a second opportunity for me to get gold.”

Florence, who is from Aberdeen, turns 26 on August 8, the day of the opening ceremony in Beijing.

He finished fourth in the test event in Beijing last August.

Florence said: "Competing in the Olympics has been a long term and major ambition of mine.

"It is truly the highlight of my sporting career.”

Florence is currently studying Chinese and can play the bagpipes.

Pennie, whose mother was an international flatwater canoeist, will also be making her debut in the Olympics.

She said: “I am looking forward to taking part in the biggest sporting event in the world and to have this opportunity to represent Great Britain is very special.”

John Anderson, who will be the team's leader in Beijing, said: “British Canoeing has a strong team with a very real chance of winning medals at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.”

Simon Clegg, the chief executive of the British Olympic Association, said: “I am delighted that a mix of old and new faces will be joining Team GB for the canoe slalom events at the Olympic Games this year.

"I am particularly pleased to select Campbell Walsh, the Olympic silver medallist in kayak single from Athens, and I am confident that all three athletes will be adding further successes to their recent performances.

"I wish them well in their final preparations in the lead up to Beijing.”
