altSARAH STEVENSON (pictured), a former world champion, will lead Britain's team of three taekwondo players at the Beijing Olympics, it was announced today.

 

The 25-year-old from Doncaster will be appearing in her third Olympics having also represented Britain in Sydney and Athens.

 

In 2000 she had finished fourth the sport made its Olympic debut but was knocked out in her first fight in 2004, describing herself as "rubbish".

 

Stevenson, who will fight in the over 67kg category, said: “I am looking forward to my third Olympics.

 

"I am hoping third time lucky.

 

"This time it is different, I am going to the Games with my eyes wide open and with no expectations or pressure on myself.

 

"I want to come home with no regrets, knowing I did the best I could no matter what.”

 

Stevenson, the 2001 world champion and a three-time European gold medallist, is joined by world junior champion Aaron Cook in the under 80kg category and Michael Harvey in the under 58kg group.

 

Cook, a 17-year-old from Manchester, was crowned world champion in Istanbul earlier this month.

 

He said: “I am really excited to have been selected to represent Team GB so soon after transferring to the senior squad.

 

"I am hoping to gain invaluable experience from Beijing that will stand me in good stead for London 2012.”

 

 Harvey, who at 18 is another promising youngster from Manchester who is hoping for success in London, said: “I was delighted to hear that I have been selected for the team.

 

"I will be aiming to make my family proud as their support has been fantastic over the past 13 years.”

 

Gary Hall, who will be the team leader in Beijing, said: “I am excited and optimistic about the performances this team will deliver.

 

"The British taekwondo team continues to go from strength to strength in a fully professionally supported system.

 

"The Beijing 2008 Olympics will be exciting on many fronts but particularly on the performance front with this exceptionally talented team.”
