July 28 - Delhi Police today assigned Ajay Chadha (pictured) as Special Commissioner for next year's Commonwealth Games in an effort to try to reassure the international community about security at the event.

He is one of several changes announced by Delhi Police designed to ensure that next year's Games go off without any problems.

Security concerns in South Asia have increased after the terror attack on Mumbai in November last year which left 166 people dead and the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in the Pakistani city of Lahore in March.

Officials have in recent months been forced to defend New Delhi as a venue for the Commonwealth Games next October after some countries, notably Australia, expressed fears about security.

Australia, one of the world's top field hockey nations, refused to send tennis team for the Davis Cup tie against India in the southern city of Chennai due to security worries.

Chadha, an officer since 1977, has been transfered from Arunachal Pradesh where he was serving as the Director General of Police.

The Commonwealth Games, which are due to open in Delhi on October 3 2010 and last until October 15, are the biggest sports event to be held in India since the 1982 Asian Games and are seen as the launchpad to a potential bid for the 2020 Olympics.
