September 8 - The national organisation for university sport, British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) has announced a new, three-year partnership with leading professional services firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC).

The relationship builds on PwC’s commitment to the development of skills and experience through sport for young people.

With BUCS, PwC will be working with 10 UK universities in year one of the partnership to deliver a series of workshops focused on the skills and attributes students develop by playing or managing sport at university.

The Skills through Sport project is specifically designed for students who are passionate about sport and will focus on the employability skills that are inherent on the pitch and much desired in the workplace, the BUCS said.

Sessions will include teamwork, leadership, coaching others, finance and project management and motivating teams.
Volunteers from PwC will coach and mentor students at the universities as part of the firm’s community affairs programme.

The relationship also offers PwC exclusive sponsorship of two BUCS sports - rowing and hockey - and the annual BUCS Ball, which took place earlier this week at Keele University.

Ed Smith, the chairman of BUCS, said: “With intense competition for jobs, it is now even more important to understand and value the skills that students can develop within their university experience.

"At BUCS we know that students who play sport and help others to play sport develop skills that are used in their communities and careers long after they graduate.

“With PwC’s experience and expertise we believe we will help our student athletes compete - not just in sport - but in their future employment searches.

“We are delighted that PwC is working with us on this new partnership and that its staff will also be involved in two of our biggest participation sports, rowing and hockey over the next three years.”

James Chalmers, head of Strategy and Talent at PricewaterhouseCoopers said: “Talented people know that to stand out in the jobs market requires more than just academic achievement alone.

"We’ve long recognised that people develop and improve their skills both in work and out of it, and that’s why we’ve partnered with BUCS this year.

“We’re looking to attract and develop people who will be successful both in our workplace and in their personal lives; and sport plays a vital role whether you’re providing volunteer support or participating directly.”
