FEBRUARY 8 - ENGLAND should not underestimate Australia in the race to host the 2018 World Cup, the former executive director of the Football Association warned today.

David Davies told the Australian newspaper Herald-Sun that there was support for the World Cup to return to Europe in 2018 but that it should not be taken for granted.

He said: "You won't be underestimated in Europe or England.

"I have said quite openly to anyone that will listen that Australia will run a very good campaign. Australia will present a very strong case.

"I believe that inspirational people like Frank Lowy will ensure it won't be a dull campaign - Australia's bid will be formidable.

"There are people here in Europe who say that if it is not England in 2018 then it will be Spain or Russia but keep your eye on Australia.

"I firmly believe it."

Davies was an important part of England's unsuccessful effort to host the 2006 World Cup which ended in controversy after it was alleged that the FA had broken a "gentleman's agreement" not to bid against Germany, who were awarded the tournament.

Davies later claimed in his book FA Confidental that the FA had been offered votes in exchange for favours.

He told the newspaper: "What most people remember about the unsuccessful bid for England 2006 was the so-called 'gentlemen's agreement' that effectively undermined England's bid from the start.

"It now appears to me that there is considerable support for the World Cup being in Europe in 2018 but the one thing I have learned is to not take any matters regarding FIFA for granted.

"The problem with England is always the scrutiny.

"English football finds it very difficult to do anything away from the glare of publicity.

"England has tended to be quite upfront about who it is supporting in elections.

"England has tended to be open about its objectives.

"But I am glad to say that, these days, scrutiny of how the bids are conducted will be greater.

"I applaud transparency."
