He was the inaugural chief executive of the Australian Sports Commission, a post he held between 1984 and 1988, and deputy chairman of the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games Organising Committee.

Britain's Alan Dickson, the President of the Cerebral Palsy International Sports & Recreation Association (CPISRA), was one of 10 people elected as IPC Members at Large.

Dickson, chief executive of Capability Scotland, a non-profit organisation which provides flexible services which support disabled people, their families and carers, has been a member of the IPC's Governing Board since 2003.
