April 8 - A new chapter in the Olympic Movement will be written when the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games will be held on the waterfront with a city skyline as the backdrop for the first time.

The venue for the Ceremonies will be The Float@Marina Bay, which is the world's largest floating stage.

Located on the waters of the Marina Reservoir, the magnificent structure is made entirely of steel and has a seating capacity of 30,000 people.

The floating platform measures 120 metres long and 83 metres wide while the venue can bear a weight of up to 1,070 tonnes.

Goh Kee Nguan, chief executive of Singapore 2010, said: "Olympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies are highly anticipated events with a global audience.

"I am confident that the creative team will be able to deliver an unforgettable and meaningful Singapore 2010 Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the participants, spectators as well as viewers.

"The ceremonies will also inspire participants and the audience to live by the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.

"As host city of the first Youth Olympic Games, Singapore is honoured to have a role in helping to create a new chapter in the Olympic Movement."

Organisers have also revealed that young people are to play an integral role from the conceptualisation to the production of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Singapore 2010 has invited teenagers to join them in brainstorming sessions to provide feedback and share their ideas and perspectives.

There will be around 7,000 youths performing in different segments of both ceremonies, which will be held on August 14 and 26 respectively.
