April 16 - Britain's young athletes, including world diving champion Tom Daley (pictured), have just over a month  left in which they will be eligible to qualify for the first ever Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore this August.

The qualification period for British athletes hoping to compete at Singapore 2010 ends on May 31 with an announcement on the final selection expected to be made by the British Olympic Association (BOA) in mid-July.

Athlete selection for the Youth Olympic Games follows the same pattern as selection for the Olympic Games whereby athletes are required to meet the set qualification standard in their sport.

Following this, each National Governing Body (NGB) will nominate athletes for selection to the BOA who will then ratify them.

BOA chief executive Andy Hunt told insidethegames: "The British Olympic Association is strongly committed to the inaugural Youth Olympic Games and look forward to sending a high-quality team, full of exciting talent, to Singapore in August."

Among the athletes who are eligible to compete in the event is Daley, who last year won a gold medal at the World Diving Championships in the 10 metre platform and who is considered to be one of Britain's main hopes for London 2012.

The Youth Olympic Games are planned to be an international multi-sport event held every four years in staggered summer and winter events complementing the current Olympic Games.

The Games will feature athletes between the ages of 14 and 18 while the Singapore 2010 Games will be held from from August 14 until 26 with an estimated 3,600 athletes set to compete in 26 sports.
