The 29-year-old managed to put her turbulent 12-months behind her, having suffered from injuries and illness, and keep her Paris 2024 Olympic dreams alive. "I’ve had a rocky couple of years," she said.

“I fell off a horse in training just before the World Cup final last year, and had a fracture in my spine, which meant I wasn’t at full fitness for the World Championships and the second half of last year. At the first World Cup I did this year, I had a migraine in the laser run of the qualifications and didn’t qualify, had an absolute disaster, and so this was my last shot. I had to come here and get a medal and I can’t believe I’ve done it.

“I’ve had a rocky couple of years but I’m back on the podium, yay!” she continued. “I don’t think I’ve ever started a laser-run so high up, so I knew I was absolutely capable of getting a medal today and I’m so happy that I could come out and do it."

Whitaker commenced the final from 16th place following the fencing ranking round, but her impressive riding and swimming performances propelled her up the leaderboard.

Blanka Guzi, a laser run specialist from Hungary, ascended from seventh place at the beginning of the final day to clinch the top spot on the leaderboard and secure her second World Cup gold. Meanwhile, Malak Ismail of Egypt earned the bronze medal finishing just a couple of seconds behind.

Varley expressed her aspiration to have secured sufficient performance to qualify for the Pentathlon World Cup Final in Turkiye by the end of the month. "I’m just keeping everything crossed, and hopefully I’ve done enough to qualify," she added. I couldn’t have done any more today and I'm very happy.”

Emma Whitaker, a teammate of Varley from Pentathlon GB, narrowly missed out on a medal, while Kate French placed 13th in a highly competitive women's final. In the men's final, Myles Pillage finished in 12th place.
