The President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, receives the 2024 Institutional Lifetime Achievement Award from the ISDE (Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía) Sports Congress.

Madrid hosted the fifth edition of the ISDE Sports Convention, the only national congress organised by a training centre, to discuss and analyse the most important developments in the global sports law sector. This event was held with the aim of creating international links as business opportunities and training experts in the most sought-after areas of the legal sports industry.

LaLiga sponsored the event, which was organised by the Superior Institute of Law and Economics (ISDE), in collaboration with the Madrid Bar Association, Madrid Chamber of Commerce and Madrid City Council, and brought together leading figures from the world of sport and law to discuss the past, present and future of their respective sectors.

ISDE Sports Convention is aimed at senior executives and managers of sports law companies, marketing and communications directors and students specialising in sports law, among others. ISC 2024 consisted of six panels or roundtables on topical issues related to sports law, sports management, regulation and administration in the field of sport.

ISC 2024 was a world-class event representing excellence and innovation in the legal and sports sectors. Nearly 1,000 delegates from more than 100 countries attended the fifth edition of the international benchmark meeting for the legal and sports industry, a sector that contributes 3.3% of GDP and more than 414,000 jobs to the Spanish economy.

This year's edition was held in a hybrid format, via streaming and in-person at the Superior Institute of Law and Economics (ISDE) headquarters. and explored cutting-edge topics such as technology, sustainability and marketing in sport. It was opened by Alejandro Halffter, Secretary General of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce, Carlos del Campo, Deputy Director of the Presidency of LaLiga, Eugenio Ribón, Dean of the Madrid Bar Association and Juan José Sánchez Puig, CEO of ISDE.

Eugenio Ribón, underlined the exponential growth of sports law in recent years, highlighting the professionalisation and commercialisation of sport and the need to address the complex legal issues that arise in this dynamic field. From the management of contracts and image rights to the resolution of disputes and the implementation of integrity policies, the role of the sports lawyer is fundamental," said the Dean.

The impact of technology and innovation on the future of sport was also explored. Juan José Sánchez Puig stressed that the aim of the ISC 2024 is to "train and teach the good things that the sports industry has to offer", using LaLiga as an example of how to professionalise and manage sustainably. 



The 'Leading case of CAS 2024' was the first panel. Juan de Dios Crespo, CEO (Ruiz-Huerta & Crespo Abogados), Francesco Macri, Arbitrator (Court of Arbitration for Sport), Iñigo de Lacalle (Senn Ferrero Asociados) and Kepa Larumbe, Head of Sports Law and TAS-CAS Arbitrator (LaLiga) moderated the panel.

This congress completes the extensive calendar of events that make Madrid a benchmark for international sport, together with other events such as the Laureus Awards —considered the Oscars of sport— and the second panel focused on ‘Productive examples of financing for the organisation of sporting events: Madrid, a model city’.

Rosa María Vidal Monferrer, Managing Partner of Broseta, was the moderator of a debate that included top-level speakers such as Javier Burgos, Commercial Director of the Mutua Madrid Open, Manuel Saucedo, CEO of WiZink Center, Alejandro Halffter, Secretary General of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services and Sonia Cea Quintana, Sports Councillor of Madrid City Council.



The winners of the 5th edition of the ISC are the Community of Madrid, for its institutional support of sport. The President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, received the award. Specifically, the regional government was recognised for "making the region the main tourist, economic and sporting attraction in Spain".

Other winners were also honoured in this year's edition: the Women's National Football Team, which took Spanish football to the highest level by winning the World Cup last year, will receive the National Award; former Real Madrid player Álvaro Arbeloa will receive the Sports Career Award; and Spanish record holder Abel Antón will receive the Legend Award.

The third round table focused on 'The prospects of sport in the future: Entertainment and technology' and was moderated by Helena Suárez Jaqueti, Partner at Ecija, and was attended by Javier Tebas Medrano, President of LaLiga, Ander Pérez Fernández-Sayar, Head of Sponsorship of Telefónica, Jorge Schnura, Co-Founder and CEO of Turing Capital, Gil Manuel Perea, lawyer at Broseta and Cristina Villasante, partner at Ecija.



Tebas was very critical of 'piracy' and denounced that Spain is the European champion in audiovisual fraud: reiterating that they know where the matches are pirated, who broadcasts the signal and how Google and Apple 'collaborate with these thefts'. The LaLiga president insisted that “what cannot happen is that you cannot produce what the industry produces because they steal the intellectual property of your matches.”

The fourth panel discussed "The phenomenon of contact sports: reasons for its success", thanks to the phenomenon of Ilia Topuria, the Spanish-Georgian UFC world champion. Marta Forcén, founding partner of Forcén Asesores, chaired a panel with Felipe Martínez, president of the Spanish Boxing Federation, Yury Zaytsev, partner at SILA International Lawyers, Miguel Ángel Martín, general manager of the Spanish Rugby Federation, Alberto Eljarrat, general manager of Sportium and Dev Kumar Parmar, partner at Parmars.

The fifth round table, entitled 'New Business Models in Football: The rise of football in the Middle East' following the arrival of players such as Cristiano Ronaldo in the region, featured prominent professionals such as Luís Fernando Pamplona Novaes, partner at Nemetz, Kuhnen, Dalmarco & Pamplona Novaes Advocacia, who acted as moderator, and high-profile speakers such as Marcos Motta, partner at Bichara e Motta Advogados, Mohammad al-Sulaiman, chief inspector of the THC, and Octavi Anoro, international director of LaLiga.

ISC 2024 also looked at the future of sport through the challenges and opportunities of managing and developing women's sport, among other key industry topics. The sixth panel discussed 'Women's Sport Management and Coaching: Challenges and Opportunities'. The final panel was moderated by Alberto Eljarrat, President of the Sportium Foundation, and included the analysis of Pedro Malabia, General Director Strategy (Liga F), Lola Fernández Ochoa, President (Fundación Blanca), Irene Aguiar, lawyer (UNO | ONE Legal Partners) and Lola Romero, Director of Women's Football at Atletico de Madrid).

On 7 June, Madrid became the epicentre of law and sport with the celebration of the ISDE Sports Convention 2024, a unique event organised by ISDE and LaLiga to discuss and debate cutting-edge topics such as technology, sustainability and sports marketing. During the event, current issues in sport were discussed, highlighting the importance of maintaining ethical and sustainable management in the sports industry. It also explored the impact of technology and innovation on the future of sport.
