The powerful squad under coach Steve Kerr, with LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant at the forefront, kicked off training camp on Saturday, ahead of their first test against Canada on Wednesday.

After two humiliations in the last FIBA World Cups, where the USA missed out on medals in 2019 and 2023, the American coaching staff has learned their lesson. Kerr is bringing out the big guns, aiming for the 5th consecutive gold. This feat hasn't been achieved since their incredible streak from the Berlin 1936 to Mexico 1968 Games, when the Dream Team secured six consecutive golds.

Also known as the 'Avengers,' their goal is to reclaim the lost pride of recent years, which has highlighted the idea that they are human. LeBron, the veteran legend as captain, along with his teammates, will seek to maintain the US dominance at the Paris event, which begins in just three weeks.

For many, this is the best roster USA Basketball has sent since Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird formed the so-called 'Dream Team' in Barcelona 1992. This time, the glorious trio of Curry —eager to enjoy his first Olympics— James, and Durant, is joined by a diverse group of veteran stars and young talents with much to prove.

Devin Booker, Bam Adebayo, Anthony Davis, Anthony Edwards, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Haliburton, Jayson Tatum, Kawhi Leonard, and Jrue Holiday complete what some consider another 'Dream Team' of sorts, whose thirst for vengeance against other international powers is immense: “We want 40-point wins,” Durant recently exclaimed.

They hit Las Vegas to get in shape and instill fear ahead of Paris 2024. The tournament will initially take place in Lille and then move to the Accor Arena in Bercy, where the stars will aim to reclaim their indisputable reputation amidst increasingly fierce competition in Europe. However, it’s well-known that Team USA shifts into a different gear when an Olympic gold medal is at stake.

"It's going to be a fun summer," said Embiid, one of the main surprises. The journey through the friendly games will be anything but easy, despite the Americans' potential: they will host Canada at home and embark on a tour in Abu Dhabi, facing Australia and Serbia. Later in London, they will play against what is considered the Cinderella team of the Games, South Sudan, and the reigning world champion, Germany. Afterward, the Olympic festivities will finally begin.

The naturalization of the Sixers' French-Cameroonian center, Joel Embiid, has bolstered an interior game that was perhaps the biggest flaw in Kerr's squad. Now, the frontcourt pairing of Anthony 'The Brow' Davis with Embiid could be lethal.

The rest of the starting lineup remains a mystery. “It’s a good problem to have,” said coach Kerr, who quickly justified himself: “I suppose the 12 players on this roster will all be in the Hall of Fame someday. So, how do you pick five (starters) out of the 12?” he asked the media. The Warriors' coach's idea is to “find combinations that work and identify two-player lineups that can be effective on both ends.”
