Los Angeles 2028 confirms venue for classic rowing. WORLD ROWING

With less than two weeks to go until the Paris Games, the Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) Olympic and Paralympic Committee has officially announced that the 2028 Olympic Rowing Regatta will be held at the Marine Stadium in Long Beach, California.

As part of this announcement by LA28, it has been confirmed that rowing will take place on the 1932 Olympic Course - for the first time ever that rowing will be held on a 1,500m course.

"We are delighted that the Marine Stadium in Long Beach has been confirmed as the venue for classic rowing at the heart of the Olympic Games," said World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland. "This is the result of a thorough and comprehensive analysis developed in close cooperation with the IOC and the Los Angeles Organising Committee as part of the Olympic Agenda 2020."

The bid proposal was to host the 2028 Olympic Regatta at Lake Perris, a reservoir east of Los Angeles (located about three hours from the Olympic Village), a complex and expensive solution that would have left no legacy and required a satellite Olympic Village.

"It is a unique situation created by a very specific context in Los Angeles (a 1,500m race)," added President Jean-Christophe Rolland. "It is certainly the best compromise for the benefit of our sport in the context of the Olympic Games. In 1932 there was a full 2000m course was in place, but since then a bridge has been built, reducing the available water to 1500m for a six lane race.

"This option was shared and discussed on multiple occasions with our member Federations and the rowing community. It will require some adaptation, for the athletes in the first place, but it shows our ability to adapt without changing the core nature of our sport. Long Beach will be a great venue and an exciting opportunity to showcase rowing to the rest of the world," he concluded.

Last year, the International Olympic Committee announced that beach sprint rowing, a form of coastal rowing, would be included in the programme for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, alongside classic rowing. For the first time, rowing will be represented by two distinct disciplines, both of which will be showcased at the heart of LA 28. The venue for Beach Sprint Rowing will be announced in due course.
