GAMMA members triumph at AMMA Asian Mixed Martial Arts Championships. GAMMA

Eight GAMMA member federations fielded teams for the AMMA Asian Mixed Martial Arts Championships in Cambodia last week, from July 11 -13. Organised by the Asian Mixed Martial Arts Association (AMMA), event is significant as the organisation is established under the Olympic Council of Asia.

Overall, 94 athletes from 15 countries and regions across Asia competed in "modern MMA" and "traditional MMA" across 19 weight categories at Phnom Penh’s National Olympic Stadium. The eight GAMMA nations to participate were: Indonesia, Korea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Thailand, Malaysia and the host, Cambodia. GAMMA President Alexander Engelhardt was in attendance and awarded medals.

For GAMMA member teams (only) competing under AMMA rules, the medals counts resulted as follows: Kazakhstan – 8 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze (13 medals); Indonesia – 2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze (5 medals); Kyrgyzstan – 2 golds and 8 bronzes (10); Cambodia – 1 gold, 5 silvers and 9 bronzes (15 medals); Malaysia – 1 gold (1 medal); India – 2 silvers and 1 bronze (3 medals); Republic of Korea – 2 silvers and 1 bronze (3 medals); Thailand – 1 silver and 1 bronze ( 2 medals).

Further to Cambodia’s hosting of AMMA’s 2nd Asian Mixed Martial Arts Championships, the country’s Prime Minister Hun Manet has announced the launch of a new annual mixed martial arts competition set to take place in the country every October. The annual championships are set to include, alongside mixed martial arts, some of Cambodia’s traditional combat systems in order to demonstrate the diversity of Khmer martial arts.
