The Volleyball Nations League (VNL) 2024 concluded with a resounding triumph last Sunday, as the Men's VNL Finals in Lodz, Poland, marked the culmination of a season that set new standards in both global viewership and attendance.

This year’s VNL demonstrated the sport's growing global appeal, with a 13% increase in attendance from 2023 and a remarkable 33% rise from 2022. The pool phases attracted an impressive 751,000 fans worldwide, with the Women’s Finals achieving an 84% sell-out rate and the Men’s Finals reaching a 78% sell-out rate. 

Hong Kong, Japan, Antalya, Fukuoka, and Hong Kong saw strong local support with sold-out matches and increased attendance numbers. In terms of viewership, VNL 2024 shattered records globally. In China, the tournament attracted a staggering 268 million viewers with peak viewership hitting 23.6 million, making it the second highest sports broadcast in the country for the year.

Poland saw a cumulative audience of 46 million, with the Women’s VNL match between Poland and Germany being a top sports program. Turkiye recorded 804,000 viewers for the women’s match between the USA and Turkiye, while Thailand achieved its highest sports viewership of 2024 with 3.7 million average viewers for the Thailand vs. China match.

Brazil also saw significant engagement, with 2.8 million viewers for the Men’s VNL match and a 27% increase in unique viewers compared to the previous year. VBTV, the VNL’s official broadcasting platform, experienced a 21% increase in live viewership and saw an 83% rise in viewership for the Women’s Finals. The Women’s Finals set a new record for VBTV, with a 38% increase in viewership over previous records. 

The platform also saw substantial growth in Italy and Brazil, with viewership increases of 99% and 103% respectively. The VNL’s digital presence was also strong, with 23.3 million social media engagements and 127 million views on the Volleyball World website.

Volleyball World CEO Finn Taylor expressed his excitement about the VNL 2024’s success, noting that the record-breaking metrics highlight the sport's growing global appeal and commercial potential. Taylor emphasised the VNL’s commitment to continuing to elevate volleyball and engage with a passionate fan base. The future of the tournament looks promising, with fans eagerly anticipating another thrilling season.
