Asian Paralympic Committee announces new leadership and internal structure. APC

At its 34th Executive Board meeting, the Asian Paralympic Committee appointed Kazuhiro Yagi as its new Vice-President and approved 26 nominees as permanent members. It also welcomed Deepa Malik as its South Asia representative.

The Board members elected at the General Assembly in Riyadh in November focused on the analysis that will lead to the preparation of the next APC Strategic Plan. However, the approval of the various new members who will be part of the revitalisation of the Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) was of paramount importance. The 34th Executive Board meeting was therefore very productive

It approved the accession of several new leaders and reached a significant milestone with the appointment of the fifth woman to the Asian Paralympic Committee, the highest number of women in its history.

The most important appointment was that of Kazuhiro Yagi from Japan as the new Vice President. Yagi is the nominated representative of AINAGOC, the Organising Committee of the Aichi Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games. He is the Deputy Secretary General of AINAGOC. He was the Deputy Executive Director of the Sports Bureau of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee.

Alongside Yagi, Deepa Malik has been appointed as the South Asia Regional Representative, bringing the number of women on the Committee to five. In addition to being a Paralympic athlete, Deepa Malik is a doctor and was the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Paralympic Games.

Malik will bring her experience and presence to help decide. APC President Majid Rashed said, "A strong board is diverse and should be representative of the population. While we have not yet achieved gender parity, having another strong female voice at our meetings is a very positive step forward. Especially when that voice is someone with the experience, skills and wisdom of Dr Deepa Malik."

A number of issues were discussed during the meeting, but one of the main items on the agenda was the composition of the Committee, which had to be approved by the Board. New members were approved for three of the five standing committees of the APC. The Games and Sport Development Committee, which is responsible for overseeing and supporting the organisation and delivery of the Asian Para Games, will be chaired by Dr Nasanbat Oyunbat from Mongolia.

She will be joined by Mr Ali Almajed of Bahrain, who will act as Vice-Chairman, and five other representatives from the Republic of Korea, Kazakhstan, China, I.R. Iran and Oman. The Medical and Sports Science Committee, chaired by Prof Dr Jalil Koohpayehzadeh Esfahani from I.R. Iran, has four sub-committees, each with its own chair.

These are:

 - Chair of the Anti-Doping Sub-Committee: Dr Badrul Amini b Abd Rashid (MAS)

 - Chairman of the Classification Sub-Committee: Dr Seunghoon HAN (KOR)

 - Medical Subcommittee Chair: Dr AOKI Takaaki (JPN)

 - Chairman of the Sports Science Sub-Committee Dr Jooyeon JIN (KOR)

The Women in Sport Committee, chaired by Dr Mu Ming-Chu from Chinese Taipei, has been joined by Ms Aishath Nazhath from the Maldives as Vice-Chair. The Committee was established to advise the APC on developing sport for women and girls at all levels of Paralympic sport and the Paralympic Movement in Asia.

It aims to raise awareness of gender equality and the inclusion of women in sport in Asia in order to increase participation. A further five members complete this committee. At the Hangzhou Asian Para Games, the Athletes' Committee representatives were elected.

Majid Rashed also commented on the new members saying, "I am delighted to welcome the new committee members to the APC. The Standing Committees do a vital job in supporting the development and growth of Para sport in Asia.

"We are fortunate that so many talented people have stepped forward to help. I wish all the committees the very best as they prepare to support our vision and mission over the next four years."
