The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has partially upheld the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) appeal against the decision of the Hearing Commission of the National Anti-Doping Organisation of Romania (NADO) and suspended Romanian long jumper Florentina Costina Iusco.

CAS modified the sanction initially imposed by the Hearing Commission of the National Anti-Doping Organisation of Romania and suspended Romanian long jumper Florentina Costina Iusco for doping with effect from 1 February 2024.

The athlete, who won a bronze medal at the European Indoor Championships in 2015, underwent an out-of-competition doping test on 23 April 2023. The analysis of her Sample A revealed the presence of furosemide, a diuretic classified in category "S5 Diuretics and Masking Agents" of the 2023 WADA Prohibited List.

This substance is considered "Specified" and is prohibited at all times, not just during competition. The counter-analysis (Sample B) corroborated the result of Sample A and confirmed a positive doping test.

The NADO Commission determined that the 28-year-old Romanian long jumper had committed an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) and issued a reprimand without a period of Ineligibility based on the absence of significant fault or negligence.

Disagreeing with the leniency of the sanction, WADA appealed to CAS and requested that a two-year period of ineligibility be imposed from the date the CAS decision took effect.

The Sole Arbitrator appointed to decide the matter concluded that Florentina Iusco had not exercised the requisite standard of care for "absence of significant fault or negligence" and determined that the appropriate sanction would be a two-year period of ineligibility from 1 February 2024, the date of the challenged decision.

As a result, Florentina Iusco is sanctioned with a two-year period of Ineligibility from 1 February 2024, and all results obtained by her in competitions from 23 April 2023 until 24 July 2024, inclusive, are disqualified, with all resulting consequences (including forfeiture of medals, points and prizes).
