Top-seeded Novak Djokovic could face his longtime rival Rafael Nadal in the second round of the Paris Olympic tennis tournament.

On Thursday, Djokovic was drawn against Australian Matthew Ebden, while Nadal will play Hungarian Marton Fucsovics. The winners of these matches are set to meet in Round 2.

The 38-year-old Nadal has claimed a record 14 of his 22 major titles at the French Open. He won gold in singles at the Beijing 2008 Olympics and in doubles with Marc Lopez at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics.

“Roland Garros, as everybody knows, is the most special place in tennis for me. I am enjoying the fact that I am back for the Olympics,” Nadal said on stage after the draw. “I am just trying to enjoy every single moment.”

World number one Iga Swiatek will face Irina-Camelia Begu in the opening round of the women's singles, while world number two Coco Gauff is set to compete against Ajla Tomljanovic.

Recent Wimbledon and French Open winner Carlos Alcaraz will play Hady Habib, with two-time Olympic champion Andy Murray following Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune in withdrawing from the men's singles.

However, the Briton will still compete in the men's doubles with partner Dan Evans. Naomi Osaka, who lit the cauldron at the Tokyo 2020 Opening Ceremony, will face Angelique Kerber in the women's singles.
